NOTE: Today’s post will be the first in a new series on Freestyle Author that I’m calling Freestyle Finds.
I get asked all of the time about my favorite font combinations for CreateSpace books. How do I choose? What are the rules?
I have a few combinations that I use regularly, but I also like to switch it up and try out new combinations. When I’m looking for inspiration, I like to see what graphic design professionals have to say about the subject. I found a nice little list of options on Douglas Bonneville’s blog.
Check out this list of 19 Top Font Combinations, along with some tips for creating your own. There is also a downloadable PDF version you can download and save for future reference.
And what did Douglas call the “Golden Rule” of font combining?
“How does combining fonts work?”
I simply followed the golden rule of font combinations, which is simply to combine a serif and a sans serif to give “contrast” and not “concord”.
By the way, one of my personal “go-to” combinations is the first one on the list: Helvetica (bold) for chapter titles and Garamond for body content.
